"Breakaway" - Avril Lavigne VS Kelly Clarkson

The pop World is like eBay. You don't want something? Give it away. Sell it.

Here's what happens to songs a lot of the time: they are written, demo-ed, recorded, given to an artist, this artist refuses them, and they are given to somebody else who makes them global smash hits and lives happily ever after.

"Breakaway" was written by Avril Lavigne and it was intended for her debut album, "Let Go" (2002) but it was scrapped and given to several artists including Samantha Moore, until it eventually ended up in Kelly Clarkson's hands.

She recorded the song and released it as a stand alone single before the release of her second studio album, and it was the soundtrack to "The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement".

The song became such a hit that Kelly decided to include it in the album, which was named after the song itself. "Breakaway" became her third top10 single and was considered by many as the highlight of her second album. It peaked at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and has sold more than 1,7 million copies in the US alone.

Avril Lavigne's original demo, which was written with Bridget Benerate and Matthew Gerrard, was about what was important to Avril in life. It has now leaked onto the Internet.

Listen to both versions of the song below.

    1. I generally prefer Avril's music, especially Goodbye Lullaby, but I do think this song suits Kelly's voice better.
