Kylie Minogue - Kiss Me Once (Album Review)

"Kiss Me Once" - Out Now
Today, Miss "I can rock a pair of hot pants like very few other women in the world" is celebrating her fourth Australian #1 album. "Kiss Me Once" is Kylie's 12th studio album and previous #1s include 2000's "Light Years", 2001's "Fever" and 2007's "X".

Kylie is a trooper; her private life and her career have suffered multiple ups and downs, but she is still going strong and has recently announced her #KissMeOnceTour (get tickets), which will open at Liverpool's Echo Arena on September the 24th.

"Into The Blue" was the single that launched the album. A return to form for Kylie, the song is incredibly pleasant and its soaring chorus is highly infectious. The video is a classy effort and it features Kylie and her sexy love interest, French actor Clement Sibony partying, chasing each other around the streets of London and generally being all loved-up.

"Sexercize" is currently serving as the second single from the album, and its video was premiered just a few days ago. It is all about bouncing on some exercise balls. It's beautifully shot and it has some funny moments (now whether they were meant to be funny or not, we wouldn't know), but it's a bit repetitive and we all know Kylie is capable of much better. The song itself isn't the most obvious hit single, but it's a little different and it's reminiscent of 2003's "Body Language".

But there's more to the album than just the singles, and "Million Miles Away" is a catchy little number. It's fast-paced, and it features a frustrated Kylie who sings about feeling "invisible".

"Sexy Love" sounds like a 70s disco number, the kind that makes you double-clap.

Other highlights include "Feels So Good", which sounds a lot like Disclosure and is definitely one of the record's best moments, "Les Sex", which makes the 80s and the most modern electronic production shake hands, and "If Only", one of the more interesting-sounding songs. Kylie's voice here is much warmer than when it is extremely altered.

The title track, "Kiss Me Once", is lyrically predictable and features the sound of bells, which sadly will forever remind of Westlife and their terribly cheesy Christmas singles. It's a cute song, just not very interesting.

The duet with Enrique Iglesias... shouldn't really have happened. The voice effects are a little irritating, his voice is tooth-achingly sweet, and the lyrics are uninspiring. Considering that Enrique Iglesias earns his living thanks to generic dance songs that feature Pitbull 'rapping' random words, a ballad isn't what I would have expected for this duet.

Thankfully track #11, "Fine" is as good as a Kylie song can be. The 90s-inspired intro and the chorus make the song. This should definitely be a single at some point.

The bonus tracks, "Mr. President" and "Sleeping With The Enemy" are a nice addition to the album. "Mr. President" is a lot of fun, it's very catchy and it reminds me of Madonna's "Some Girls", although it is faster than that. "Sleeping With The Enemy" is a dreamy Emeli Sandé-sounding song and it's the perfect way to close the album. Beautiful.

Our score: 7.5/10
