"Moulin Rouge!": Nicole Kidman's Diamond

Last night I went back to the Moulin Rouge.

It was everything I remembered it to be: fun, crazy, over the top, dramatic, beautiful, sad, heart-warming and heart-breaking.

If I ever had any sort of emotional block, by the end of the movie it was completely gone. Good riddance.

As far as I'm concerned, Nicole Kidman has never looked or acted better than in this multi-award winning jukebox musical film. Her sheer beauty and class were perfect for the role of Satine, her voice, her bright red hair, her slim physique that made all those costumes look so amazing.

Nicold Kidman as Satine
Moulin Roung! tells the story of a British writer, Christian (a very yellow-teethed Ewan McGregor), who makes his way to Paris to become part of the Bohemian movement. He randomly befriends a bizarre group of performers who are working on a new show called "Spectacular Spectacular", which they hope to sell to the owner of the Moulin Rouge. They decide that Christian would meet Satine, convince her to tell her boss about the show and make sure he will finance its production.

During one of the Moulin Rouge shows, Satine performs as the star of the night, like she does every night. She's meant to sell herself to a Duke, but she mistakes Christian for the duke and brings him back to her luxurious room.

A scene from the movie
I won't tell you the whole story, but they quickly fall in love with each other, and the Duke is not pleased. He does his best to stop them from seeing each other and even threatens to kill Christian if he doesn't leave Satine alone. Little does he know that Satine is going nowhere, as she is sick with a deadly disease...

The musical moments in the movie are outstanding; the reworked versions of Elton John's "Your Song" and The Police's "Roxanne" stand out, and so does the original "Come What May", a heartfelt duet between Ewan and Nicole, a declaration of eternal love to one another. The word "emotional" doesn't begin to describe it.

It's so powerful, Ewan and Nicole can both sing much better than many popstars around at the time (2001) and nowadays, and it's lyrically romantic. It makes you feel something, unless you're a stone cold bitch.

The costumes are perfect, the sets are beautifully tacky, and the dialogues are brilliant as they contain lyrics from many different popular songs, such as Madonna's "Like A Virgin".

All in all, one of the best movies ever, at least to me. It touched me and moved me, and that's what it's all about, isn't it?
